Ed Wins Wessex League Two Years Running
Edward Gronbech riding for Oxford City RC has topped off his cyclocross season by winning his last race in the Wessex Cyclocross League which took place on Sunday 5th January in Southampton. Ed (14yrs) dominated the under 16 race winning by over two minutes. Ed set a commanding pace as he set off quickly opening up a lead on the first lap of over a minute and a half over Charlie Cooper (Chapel Tri-Stars). Angus Hawkins (PPV) was third and in turn he had a lead of over a minute from Erin Baker (Southdown Velo).
This consolidated Ed’s position at the top of the league table and means he has won the under 16 youth category for this season.
This follows his win in the under 14 category of the Wessex League last year.
His last cyclo-cross race of the season was the National Championships held this year at Derby last Saturday. The overnight deluge of rain made for interesting conditions in this first day of the British Cycling National Cyclo-cross Championships. In very muddy conditions he came 23rd in the under 16 youth race out of 60 competitors.
After some superb results aged 14 in the under 16 category let see what Ed can do next year!!

P to P
Driving to the course in Newmarket did not fill us with confidence, as the skies were grey and we were hit by several heavy showers. Once at the course, the windy conditions also did little to settle the nerves. Word from earlier riders was a tailwind on the way to the turn followed by headwind on the return.
I set off at what I hoped was a sustainable pace, having not ridden a 25 for over a year. It felt good to the turn. I was pushing a good power despite the tailwind and felt ok. However, rounding the turn produced a faceful of wind, and the drop in riding pace was alarming! My 2-minute man was in site, to I set about catching him which acted as a distraction.
Things were beginning to get on top of me around 17-18 miles with the wind, fatigue and course undulations (which seemed much more up than down!). But I was dealt a good hand, as at ~20miles the course turned and I seemed to be a bit more sheltered from the wind. My pace increased significantly and I got the hammer down. A few passing lorries also gave me a much needed boost right when I needed it and I crossed the line knowing I'd smashed my PB (51:56 set in Wales) with a new time of 50:30. Things got even better when Mark Jones returned after his ride (also a PB, a stunning 49:34) to inform me that my time was a new OCRC club record!
What a fantastic day, only ruined by the lack of cake at the hq!!!
